Campaigning was contentious for some legislative candidates in the 2026 West Virginia primary election. Political action committees played a highly visible role. It was an aggressive version of politics that left many bruised.

While voter turnout was low, the election resulted in meaningful change in the state Supreme Court of Appeals and what could be lasting discord among elected state leaders. Voters set the stage for the November general election. Party control of the House and Senate won’t change, but relationships within the Capitol are changing.

Media and political observers speculate about what will follow the 2026 primary. Those facts and opinions are widely available. Key questions remain: How will the 2026 primary and the general elections affect the makeup of legislative committees and relationships between the legislative and executive branches of government? Will the red-hot politics of 2026 influence state governance in 2027 and beyond?

HartmanCosco Government Relations is committed to assessing the political landscape and understanding the effects of the primary and general elections. The general election in November is likely to bring about more change, and we will examine its effects. Our goal is to contribute to building a better West Virginia.

While measuring the change, HCGR will continue to communicate honestly, promptly, and professionally with our clients and West Virginia’s political leaders while they fashion their agenda.

That will never change.
